Frugal Momster Beginnings

I’m Kate Nesi, and I’m the Frugal Mom$ter!

I wasn’t always frugal, and I wasn’t always a Mom(ster). About 10 years ago, back in 2006, I was in a financial mess of thousands (and adding semesterly) in graduate student loans, a brand new mortgage with only 5% down + lots of PMI with my soon-t0-be husband, and no savings to be found. We were struggling week by week to make ends meet, we didn’t have a gauge on how to save money together, and we spent our Friday nights perusing the aisles of Target to shop shop shop after going out to eat meals we could’ve cooked at home.

We were planning our wedding, fixing up our new home, and trying to stay on top of monthly payments, debts, and adding to the pile in the process. While I never had consumer debt (I learned from others how horrible it can be early on in my young life), my soon-to-be husband at the time was drowning in a bit of it. It wasn’t pretty, but looking back after hitting our financial bottom, we’ve grown into a power frugal couple and have learned a ton of things about personal finance and added to our skillsets on top of it. If I had never come across a site about getting rich slowly, I probably would be far worse off today.

No New Clothes for a Year

I’ve been avoiding buying clothes as much as possible lately because first, I hate how I look and I can’t find anything to fit my body right, and second I don’t want to spend much on clothes that I hopefully will no longer need in six months to a year (i.e. fat wardrobe). I did spend some here and there for two pairs of jeans, and other items to survive back to work at the beginning of November, but mostly everything I wear is too tight, short, or ugly. Thankfully, no one cares a whole lot about my work outfits fitting me pristinely!

I recently came across the idea to avoid buying clothes for an entire year. Say, wha?

I Quit Facebook

I did it again. You played with my heart. I got lost in the game.
Opps, I did it again…

Oh, hi there! I’m just singing a song to my favorite social network that I love to hate, Facebook.

Over a month ago, I deactivated my personal profile for the umpteenth time. This time though, I actually stayed off! In the past, I used to deactivate only to be sucked back in within hours of making the decision. I just.couldn’t.let.go. Continue reading…

Let Me Guess, You’re a Photographer, Too?

When I deleted my blog, a lot of great posts went with it. So, I’m re-posting items that I believe others might find useful. This post originally appeared on my blog on November 9, 2010.

The hot topic flying around in the photography biz is how everyone is a photographer.
And you know what, that’s quite alright with me 🙂

Sure, when I started, I thought gosh, yeah, everyone is a photographer, including me! How on earth will I compete? I found myself feeling overwhelmed when I mentioned the word photography to anyone and then they told me they were a photographer too. Say what???? For some time, I even stopped telling people I was a photographer and thought what on earth am I getting myself into?
